HTTYD: Waterbending collage by dreamer45 HTTYD: Waterbending collage by dreamer45
More drawings of Hiccup as a waterbender; I had a lot of fun with these :D This is the first time in a while that I've ever taken the time to decently shade something, so I'm pretty proud of myself X3 Now to explain the pictures...

Top left: Hiccup using his bending to catch Toothless a snack :D I really suck at drawing Toothless and haven't got any references of him yet, but I still drew him anyways. I'm so weird...

Top right: Hiccup using legitimate waterbending for the first time during dragon training (legitimate as in actually fighting with it, not just a smack and run away screaming). He's using the octopus form, which is controlling 8 water whips at the same time, against a Gronckle which bit his leg and ate his boot, hence the bleeding and barefooted-ness, LOL X3 I really love how the pose turned out and pretty much the whole drawing turned out in general, though I do wish that I did a better job on his bare foot; it looks jacked-up to me...

Bottom left: "I won't let you hurt Toothless!" Hiccup using bloodbending (go look it up, I don't feel like explaining) on his dad to keep him from hurting Toothless more. It's at the part where Toothless comes to protect Hiccup from the Monstrous Nightmare and everyone is all like 'NIGHT FURY, OMGEEZ!" and they go all crazy and stuff and, yeah.... Hiccup's crying because this is an intense moment for him...

Bottom right: Hiccup to the rescue! Nah, just kidding :D He's just getting ready to protect himself from a [different] Gronckle by bending water from a nearby bucket while said dragon chases Astrid and Ruffnut around the arena. Just a silly piece to lighten the mood from the other drawing :D

Enjoy the collage!

I always thought Hiccup would be either an airbender, because the other Vikings would see that as wimpy, or firebending, which he could practice by copying dragon movements- eg The Dancing Dragon from The Firebending Masters

I felt water would be most appropriate for Hiccup since air seemed too energetic and carefree for him, I get that airbending would be associated with the whole flying thing, but then he wouldn't really have much use for Toothless then, ya? I really can't see him as a firebender cuz even though he can be stubborn, he's not nearly as hotheaded and aggressive as the other vikings, and firebending is kind of an aggressive style, so not really a good fit for Hiccup (especially since here we're only discussing the first film).

Water, in my personal opinion, is the best fit for Hiccup. It's been referred to as the element of change, which I think is pretty important to Hiccup's character. He changed his perception of dragons during the film and he even changed his village's way of life towards the end. Water can be gentle as well as aggressive, it's very fluid and pliable for change, much like Hiccup's personality. He's not always stubborn nor is he always meek and shy, he's able to change his demeanor depending on how he's feeling. Water, especially in the Avatar-verse, has healing properties, and in a way Hiccup "healed" Toothless by making him a prosthetic that enabled him to fly once more (true, Toothless heavily relies on Hiccup to operate the prosthetic, but Hiccup eventually makes one that Toothless can operate independently in "Gift of the Night Fury", which he ended up refusing in the end because of his strong bond with Hiccup).

can he bloodbend since he's a waterbender(and a powerful one at that) and maybe heal people like Katara did?
dreamer45 Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2014
Yeah, he can bloodbend. I'm not too sure about the healing thing (since I don't think we've really seen any male healers in the Avatar series), but I think he probably could.

for the healing part it could be rare among males

It's highly possible that's the case :)
