My entry for art contest that stated "Adapt the drawing of the Characters/setting to reflect modern day as well as incorporation of modern times". I hope I place in this contest, I worked really hard on this! This was a lot of fun to think about and draw, but this took forever to finish! I got up at 9:30 this morning to lineart and color, and now it's 4 in the afternoon and my wrist is killing me! I do like how the colors came out, looks so much better than the sketches! Now, to explain my entry:
Most modern day adaptations I've seen of HTTYD (mostly in fanfics) have Toothless depicted as Hiccup's pet cat, and that kinda irks me. I mean, where's the fun in the whole "Forbidden Friendship" stuff with a domestic house cat? And the whole"Test Flight" concept wouldn't even exist if Hiccup had nothing to ride, and I don't think a pet cat would appreciate you sitting on it, much less support your weight, no matter how light you are. And in some fanfics I read, cat Toothless is just THERE; he doesn't do anything of any importance, he just sits around the house doing nothing all day. My remedy for that is to make the modern day equivalent of Toothless a horse. Horses can be a force to be reckoned with and can be misunderstood by some people like dragons were in the movie (I've met people who were either terrified by or hated horses). Keep in mind that while Toothless does display mannerisms of a cat, he also shows those of dogs and horses, so you can't flame me for that, ha! As opposed to a cat, you can pretty much keep in the flying scenes with a horse, but instead of being in the air, you're on the ground (but sometimes galloping on a horse feels like you're flying ). Plus, if dragons existed today, I'd fly to school rather than take a car, and cars possibly wouldn't even be invented if you could fly anywhere you wanted on a dragon, so having Toothless stay a dragon wouldn't properly depict modern times. And I know his eyes in this picture aren't proportional to his face, but it wouldn't be an equine version of Toothless without his big green eyes Enough of my rant and on to the picture:
I've pretty much already explained Toothless so I'll move on to Hiccup. For his normal clothes (top right corner), I tried my best to keep them looking like his original outfit in the movie, but obviously they have modern day tweaks like Converse ( I never see guys wear Uggs), jeans, a more stylish and up-to-date vest, and a polo t-shirt ( cuz wearing a tunic to school automatically labels you as a "weirdo" X3). The bottom right pic is just an alternate shirt for him to wear. The wrist-thingies were a bonus because I like them and didn't feel like drawing a watch And he has his handy-dandy sketchbook! For Hiccup's riding clothes, I had him wear knee-high riding boots (because I think they're so B.A.) and tan riding pants that have an official name I can't remember His windbreaker is inspired by my Rose Parade pullover, but instead of flowers, I simplified it to the circle and whatever-the-hell-shape the yellow patch is. Look! I even incorporated technology! I couldn't envision what kind of cell phone Hiccup would have, so I thought of mine, which happens to be pink, and now he's stuck with it, lol XP Let's just pretend it was the only one that came with his phone plan I even drew Hiccup listening to an iPod while hanging out with Toothless and taking a nap. I was merciful and made the iPod teal instead of pink
The pictures themselves somewhat illustrate parts/concepts in the movie (top right is just a pin-up to show off his outfit ). The jumping one (with the invisible obstacle, lol XP) embodies the first flight (ride in this case) that they have together and the one underneath it shows instead of spilling the beans with Toothless to the rescue in the kill ring, it's the dreaded "where are you and what are you doing" parent phone call! The other two are bonding scenes where they're just hanging out and becoming best buddies
I'm REALLY sorry for the super long description, but I had to get it all out there, especially since I'm entering this into a contest! I hope you all enjoy and wish me luck!
EDIT: I LOST. FUCKING CRASHED AND BURNED WITH SHITTY SCORES ALL ACROSS THE BOARD. GOD FREAKING DAMMIT...I worked hard on this thing, but apparently it wasn't good enough. You have to shade things and all this bullshittery to even be considered good enough to place or thought of putting your all into it >:I One of the judges told me it was "lacking creativity" I'm sorry, what? I thought I was being very creative when I thought of this, but I guess not. I'm so pissed to the point that I can't decide whether to never enter a contest there for the rest of my life, or to enter the next one and throw some badass thing in their faces that says "Hey, I actually tried on this and put in a creative effort!!" I dunno yet....I sound like a bad sport, but I have a right to be upset right now, but I'll get over it after a good night's sleep....Obviously everyone else who entered is better than me at art, but that's not going to make me quit drawing, I love it too much. I guess better luck next time....
EDIT NUMERO DOS: To everyone who commented/will comment on this, I appreciate the encouraging words and support about how I'm not a total failure, but it's been like, almost 2 years since that contest and I'm over all of it now. I got really bent out of shape with that contest because I tried really hard on this at the time and I was hoping just to place since there really weren't that many entries. If there had been a bigger turnout, I most likely wouldn't have freaked out as much as I did, but people tend to get crazy when they're close to winning something...kinda like when you scream and yell at your TV and almost break your controller when you're thisclose to winning a super-difficult boss battle in a game as opposed to just dying not even halfway through. But again, I'm over it and you guys have given me some legit critiques that will help me improve my art
